D-LIT: Digital Literacy

I designed a 5-week workshop series that starts with foundational computer skills like using a mouse and navigating File Explorer and then builds to cover core Microsoft Office programs—Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. We were able to partner with Verizon to offer a free laptop to all participants who completed the series. Below are samples of advertising and portions of the curriculum. We branded the series “D-LIT.”

canvas 101

Northern Kentucky University transitioned to a new learning management system (LMS), Canvas, in 2017. Our instructional design team developed a training program to prepare the entire faculty body for the changes from the previous LMS, Blackboard Learn. Our strategy had the following components:

  • A series of in-person synchronous training sessions that rotated throughout the year.

  • An online facilitated training series that mirrored the in-person trainings.

  • A self-guided course.

  • A digital marketing campaign to drive excitement for the new LMS.

I also live-blogged the process of designing and delivering this program in the Canvas Community. You can check it out with the first post, Preparing Your Canvas: Starting a New LMS.

Digital campaign example

This is one example of our digital marketing strategy. Our campus has screens installed in public spaces of each building that allowed us to cycle through different ads throughout the year. We took down the link in this ad once our LMS transition finished.

Other signs we used took an informative angle, listing the number of courses being taught in Canvas or the number of instructors that had gone through our training program. By the end of the transition we had over 600 instructors enrolled in Canvas 101.

graphics, banners, and Buttons (oh my)

This stand-alone course was designed in response to feedback we gathered from faculty showing how passionate they were about making their courses visually engaging. So, I made Graphics, Banners, and Buttons (also called Canvas-201) to condense some of the knowledge from my graphic design background into a quick, accessible series of tips. The brief required it to be self-guided and without grading requirements for a facilitator. Additionally, I avoided using industry-specific software like Adobe Illustrator for the material, as it would be unfamiliar to most faculty. Instead, I designed the lessons and also all the visuals in the course using PowerPoint, an application I could guarantee every instructor would have installed on their computer.

The course was successful enough that I made a public, non-NKU version of it available. You do need to have an account for Canvas, but accounts are totally free to create. You can enroll here: Enroll in Graphics, Banners, and Buttons (oh my).

career readiness through experiential learning

We used two Qualtrics surveys to facilitate a volunteer program with students as part of a job-readiness course in the College of Business. The basis of the program was to get students career-ready by having them go through resume reviews and phone interviews with actual corporate people in specific industries. Qualtrics enabled us to quickly assign large numbers of students to our roster of volunteers. Qualtrics also gave us the ability to track that students had successfully contacted a volunteer, and that the volunteer had been able to provide feedback. I was responsible for the following components of the program:

  1. A volunteer portal for organizing dates, forms, and instructions for each phase of the program (pictured below).

  2. Student-facing surveys that transmitted their information to the correct volunteer.

  3. A volunteer-facing survey that transmitted feedback back to the students and an instructor.
